Types of wooden floors for stairs
Luxurious wooden stairs do not need additional coloring to increase their attractiveness. The durable, finely grained mahogany has a warm, even color that ranges from beige to dark brown, depending on the type of mahogany chosen.
The yellowish brown teak has good texture and grain. Teak contains silica and natural oils that help repel pests.
street oak and white oakare the most popular wooden floors. Red Oak has pink undertones with gold or brown/grey undertones. Red Oak contains medium to heavy grain.
Other types ofnative hardwoodused on stairs are:
- Grau– Similar to white oak, its unique grain can be curly, wavy or straight. The color ranges from white to light or medium brown.
- Finished– Warm brown with reddish undertones, this hardwood has straight, solid grains.
- Mutter- Add warmth to your staircase with this chocolate brown hardwood. With a Janka hardness of 1010, it is one of the softest hardwood species.
- birch– Red Birch is a golden brown with red undertones and Yellow Birch is a creamy white with yellow undertones. All birches tend to look great with even curls.
- Teaser– White to medium brown wood with a variegated grain, mostly used in wider boards due to the intense grain.
The steps (what you step on) and the steps (the part that supports each step) can be bare wood or painted for contrast. You can also place a mat over the steps and risers to improve the look and prevent slipping. Tiling the steps is also another great way to give your wooden staircase a unique look.
care and considerations
Consider the following pros and cons when choosing a wooden staircase:
- Wooden stairs are slippery, so look elsewhere if you have young children or the elderly in your home.
- Allow hardwood to acclimate to the atmosphere of your home for about a week before installing. This ensures that the wood does not shrink when exposed to moisture during the summer months.
- Unless stained, most hardwood species are light to medium in color.
